Salvia Divinorum Effects
The effects of Salvia Divinorum go from laughing to profound altered states of mood, mind, body, and insightfulness. Salvia is known for visionary effects where visions of nature, the larger self of being, past memories, perceptions of being in different locations at once and other effects.
It is also known to induce a dysphoric state of mind, characterized by unpleasant moods. Long term users of the drug have reported déjà vu in some cases. However, most of the users felt that Salvia had an antidepressant effect.
An Internet survey of 500 people shows no consensus with regard to Salvia's effects on one's state of mind. About a fourth of the respondents reported a significant improvement in mood, while only 5 percent reported negative effects. Nevertheless, most of the respondents were not addicted to Salvia Divinorum. Some of the users reported a feeling of laziness, and a heavy feeling. Some could perceive movements with slight alterations, with reverberations inside the ears. Some hallucinated, while others felt disconnected from reality.
Salvia Divinorum is said to have great therapeutic potential. A Salvia Divinorum user once said “It first felt like I was being lifted from my body, out the top of my head. “.Some people claimed to have attained ‘Spiritual Nirvana’. Salvia has been successfully used in some cases to treat milder forms of depression. By providing a patient of depression with small doses of Salvia, doctors were able to induce in these patients a feeling of self confidence. Some call this a kind of ‘psycho spiritual awakening’.
The psychedelic activity of Salvia Divinorum however, varies with dosage and method of ingestion. Over dose of Salvia had intoxicating effects on a few people. This intoxicating effect, however, is short lived. The effects, may last an entire hour, or more, depending on the dosage.
In an extremely interesting case, Mazatec Shamans have used Salvia Divinorum to identify and trace perpetrators of a crime and find lost animals. The hallucinating effect of Salvia is said to be the reason behind this. Salvia has also been deemed a cure for swollen belly, generalized weaknesses and headaches. Salvia can also free some people from addictions.
Ongoing research shows that Salvia Divinorum could be used to cure several disorders and conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. Since Salvia Divinorum has not been completely explored by scientists, there may be many more exciting effects uncovered in the future.
